A metal stamping supplier is audit-ready when it can connect the buyer's drawing to a feasible strip and tool concept, controlled production settings, measurable acceptance criteria, and a clear response when material, tooling or revision changes. A long equipment list is not equivalent to that evidence.

Begin with the part, not the press
Review material grade and temper, thickness tolerance, grain direction, edge condition, bend radii, draw depth, burr direction, flatness, cosmetic surfaces, joining features and downstream finish. These inputs determine whether the process should use a simple tool, compound die, progressive die or another route. They also determine which risks need evidence before production approval.
Audit the tooling lifecycle
- Who creates and approves the tool concept and strip layout?
- How are die drawings, inserts and revisions identified?
- Which wear points are monitored, and what triggers maintenance?
- How are replacement components verified before release?
- What happens to work in progress when a die change is introduced?
- Who owns the tool and its data if the sourcing arrangement ends?
Ask for project-relevant records rather than generic photographs. A maintenance form is useful only when it identifies the die, operation, finding, action and release decision.

Build an RFQ that can be audited later
Include the drawing revision, 3D data, material specification, expected volumes, life-of-program assumptions, tooling ownership, sample approval, critical dimensions, surface finish, packaging and change-notification expectations. If a tolerance or finish is still under discussion, label it as an open assumption rather than allowing it to become an undocumented quote condition.
Separate system certification from project approval
A management-system certificate can support supplier evaluation, but it does not prove that a specific die, material lot or stamped part meets the released requirements. Confirm the current certificate scope independently, then review project-specific feasibility, control and inspection evidence.

What should a buyer send before a stamping feasibility review?
Send the controlling drawing and CAD model, material and temper, annual and lot volume, burr direction, cosmetic requirements, finish, critical characteristics, packaging needs, and expected approval evidence.
Does press tonnage prove stamping capability?
No. Capability depends on part geometry, material, tool design, feed, forming sequence, maintenance, process control, inspection, and demonstrated results for the approved design.
Who should own a progressive die?
Ownership, maintenance responsibility, storage, access to drawings, change approval, replacement inserts, end-of-life handling, and transfer rights should be agreed in the commercial and tooling terms.
