Sheet Metal Powder Coating RFQ Guide: Masking, Film Thickness and Inspection

“Powder coat black” is not a complete finish requirement. A quote-ready specification identifies the substrate and pretreatment authority, powder system, colour and appearance reference, visible and masked zones, dimensions that apply after coating, film-thickness requirement, inspection evidence, process sequence and packaging condition.

Those decisions affect finishing scope, masking labour, assembly fit, electrical contact, cosmetic approval and shipment protection. Use this guide with the custom sheet metal parts page from Zhengna Technology, then route the controlled project package through the contact page.

Start with the supplied finish state

State whether the quotation covers fabricated bare parts, powder-coated parts, installed hardware, a finished assembly or another defined condition. The same bracket can have different risks when welding, riveting, clinch hardware, tapping, adhesive labels or final assembly occurs before or after coating.

Identify who owns each operation and who releases the final condition. If coating is performed by an approved external finisher, the RFQ should keep the drawing revision, part lot, finish instruction and inspection evidence traceable through shipment, finishing, return and release. A commercial offer that includes finishing does not by itself prove that every step is performed in-house.

Define the substrate and coating authority

Record the sheet material, grade, condition, thickness and any surface state that affects preparation or coating. Galvanized steel, carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminium do not share one universal pretreatment or adhesion route. The drawing or finish specification should identify the approved coating system and any permitted substitution process.

Specify the colour standard or approved sample, gloss or texture expectation, visible faces, acceptable colour variation and any environmental or regulatory requirements owned by the buyer. If outdoor exposure, chemicals, cleaning agents, UV, temperature or corrosion performance matters, define the service condition and the responsible test specification. Colour alone is not evidence of durability.

Build a masking map around function

Mark no-coat and controlled-build areas on the drawing. Explain why each zone is protected so the masking method and inspection can match its function. Common examples include:

  • threads, tapped holes, studs and fastener seating faces;
  • grounding or electrical-contact pads;
  • weld, braze, bond or seal surfaces;
  • datums, bearing faces, sliding interfaces and locating features;
  • gasket lands, label areas, optical openings and heat-transfer interfaces;
  • tight holes, slots, hinges and assembly gaps affected by coating build.

Define the mask boundary, allowed edge, plug or cap condition, mask-removal responsibility and protection of exposed metal after removal. A note that says “mask threads” leaves open whether the first thread, lead-in chamfer, shoulder or seating face is included.

Control dimensions in the final state

Separate dimensions that apply to the fabricated part from dimensions accepted after coating. A final assembly can fail even when the bare metal passed inspection if coating narrows a hole, changes a slot, fills a thread, raises a seating face or interferes with a hinge or latch.

For fit-sensitive features, define the final datum, measurement condition, gauge or mating check and whether the requirement applies before coating, after coating, or at both stages. Do not solve the problem by tightening every bare-metal tolerance. Identify the interfaces that actually need final-state control.

Specify film thickness as a measured requirement

State the required cured-film thickness range and the surfaces or measurement zones to which it applies. Edge geometry, recesses, holes, corners, racks and complex shapes may not build uniformly. One reading on an easy flat panel does not necessarily represent a critical edge or masked boundary.

ASTM D7378-16(2024) addresses measurement of applied coating powder to predict cured thickness, while ASTM D3451-24 is a current guide for testing coating powders and powder coatings. The applicable method still depends on the substrate, coating state, instrument, geometry and project specification. These references structure buyer questions; they do not establish Zhengna Technology compliance or a project result.

Match inspection evidence to the release decision

The Powder Coating Institute defines masking as covering areas to prevent powder coverage and describes film thickness as the depth of the cured coating. These simple terms are useful only when the drawing connects them to functional surfaces and acceptance evidence.

Freeze the operation sequence before quotation

List cutting, bending, welding, grinding, cleaning, hardware installation, coating, marking and assembly in the intended order. Powder coating before a later weld or press-fit can create a different risk from coating after those steps. Hardware installed before coating may need masking and final thread or seating checks; hardware installed later can damage the accepted finish.

State how rework is authorized. Stripping and recoating, touch-up, thread clearing or local repair can change appearance, dimensions or performance. The quotation and quality plan should identify who may approve rework, what evidence must be repeated and how reworked parts remain traceable.

Protect the accepted finish through shipment

Packaging should preserve cosmetic faces, corners, threads, masked metal and assembly features. Define separators, bags, protective film, trays, quantity per pack, orientation, label placement and limits on part-to-part contact where needed. A finish that passes at the coater but arrives scratched or rubbed is not a successful supplied condition.

  6. Dimensions, threads, gaps and interfaces accepted after coating.
  7. Cured-film range, measurement locations, method and required records.
  8. Appearance, adhesion, corrosion or other project-specific tests and owners.
  9. Hardware, welding, marking, assembly, rework and release sequence.
  10. Prototype, batch and annual quantities, packaging and delivery destination.

Frequently asked questions

Is “powder coat black” enough for a quotation?

No. Define the substrate, approved powder or selection authority, colour and appearance reference, masked zones, final dimensions, film thickness, inspection, process sequence and packaging.

Which sheet-metal areas usually need masking?

Threads, grounding pads, weld or bond zones, datums, bearing faces, gasket lands, sliding surfaces, tight holes and fit-sensitive interfaces may need masking when the drawing requires them to remain uncoated or build-controlled.

Should dimensions be checked before or after coating?

Define both states where coating can affect fit. Critical final interfaces should have an after-coating requirement, method and datum condition instead of relying only on bare-metal inspection.

Does a film-thickness reading prove corrosion performance?

No. It proves only the measured coating thickness at the identified location and condition. Corrosion performance depends on the complete substrate, preparation, coating system, cure, geometry, exposure and applicable test plan.

Can representative sheet-metal media prove the finish route?

No. A photograph can show visible component form or surface appearance, but it cannot establish the powder system, pretreatment, film thickness, cure, process owner, test result or approval.
