Stainless Sheet Metal in Corrosive Service: Design and Sourcing Checklist
Stainless steel durability depends on the complete service and fabrication route, not the word “stainless.” Exposure chemistry, temperature, wet time, crevices, deposits, galvanic contact, grade, finish, welding heat, contamination, cleaning, and maintenance all affect corrosion risk.
Define the environment before selecting a grade

Control fabrication contamination and heat effects
Carbon-steel contact, shared abrasives, embedded iron, weld discoloration, incomplete cleaning, and damaged surface film can undermine corrosion behavior. Define segregation, tooling cleanliness, weld treatment, cleaning, and verification according to project risk.
Design drainage, access, and edges
A more expensive grade cannot always compensate for trapped liquid, inaccessible joints, rough crevices, or poor drainage. Review hems, overlaps, fasteners, welds, corners, and horizontal surfaces with the real installation orientation.
Validate the full material-finish system
Passivation, pickling, electropolishing, blasting, brushing, coating, or cleaning may be relevant, but none should be added as a generic cure. Define the required condition, protected areas, test method, appearance, and records with the responsible engineer.
Release checklist
- current drawing, model, revision, and governing specifications;
- material, condition, quantities, secondary processes, and environmental requirements;
- marked critical features and agreed measurement methods;
- sample, documentation, packaging, and change-control expectations;
- recorded assumptions, exclusions, and approval responsibilities.
