Material Selection for Custom Metal Stamping: Buyer Checklist
Choose stamping material from the part function, forming severity, environment, secondary processes, and supply condition. A familiar alloy name is not enough: temper, thickness tolerance, grain direction, coating, and lot consistency can change both die behavior and finished-part performance.

Translate function into material requirements
List load, stiffness, fatigue, conductivity, corrosion exposure, temperature, weight, cosmetic surface, weld or solder needs, and restricted-substance rules. Separate mandatory requirements from preferences so the supplier can identify real tradeoffs.
Check formability before tooling is frozen
Strength and formability must be reviewed together. Bend radius, draw depth, hole-to-edge distance, embossing, local thinning, springback, grain direction, and burr orientation can affect die design and process stability.

Compare total route cost, not raw material price
A lower price per kilogram can be offset by more stations, slower feed, lubricant changes, tool wear, scrap, heat treatment, plating, or sorting. Ask the supplier to state the assumptions behind material utilization, strip layout, secondary operations, and expected control points.
Control substitution and traceability
Do not approve “equivalent material” without defining who compares chemistry, mechanical properties, coating, formability, and application rules. Record approved alternatives, affected tests, certificate requirements, and the change-control path.

Questions buyers ask
Can one stamping die run different materials?
Sometimes, but changes in grade, condition, thickness, coating, friction, and springback may require clearance, forming, lubrication, or inspection changes. Review the substitution before production.
Is stainless steel always the best corrosion-resistant choice?
No. Corrosion depends on the environment, grade, finish, contamination, crevices, galvanic contact, and maintenance. The design owner should approve the complete material and finish system.
What should be sent with a stamping material RFQ?
Send the released drawing, material standard and condition, thickness, finish or coating, quantities, critical features, environmental requirements, and required material records.
