Custom Special Fasteners: Drawing, Thread, Finish and Inspection RFQ Guide
A custom fastener RFQ is ready for manufacturing review when it identifies the controlled drawing, thread system, material or required property basis, functional interfaces, process restrictions, finish, inspection evidence, quantities and release owner. A photograph, sample or generic bolt description cannot define thread fit, strength, coating allowance or assembly performance by itself.
Start with the part authority, not a catalogue resemblance
Special fasteners often resemble standard bolts, screws, nuts, studs or threaded pins while changing one feature that controls the application: a shoulder, reduced shank, cross hole, head recess, flange, captive feature, non-standard length, thread runout, coating zone or assembly interface. The RFQ should identify which released record controls the part and which features are only references.
Send the current 2D drawing and a 3D model when available. State the revision, units, general tolerance basis and data precedence if the files disagree. If the starting point is a sample, define whether the sample is design authority or only a reference for reconstruction. Wear, plating buildup, thread damage and permanent deformation on a used sample must not silently become nominal dimensions.

Define the thread as a controlled interface
A thread callout needs more than nominal diameter. Identify the thread system, pitch, tolerance class, internal or external form, thread length, start and runout condition, lead-in, incomplete-thread allowance and any unthreaded shoulder that locates the assembly. State whether the requirement applies before or after coating.
Also define the mating part or a controlled gauge strategy. A ring or plug gauge result can support the agreed thread acceptance state, but it does not prove clamp load, prevailing torque, fatigue life, sealing or complete assembly function. If torque or clamp-force behavior matters, name the joint design, lubrication state, test method and responsible validation party instead of leaving the fastener supplier to infer them.
Separate material identity from mechanical-property acceptance
The RFQ should state whether material chemistry, a specified property class, a heat-treatment condition or a buyer-controlled specification is the governing requirement. These are related but not interchangeable. A familiar alloy name does not establish final hardness, tensile behavior, toughness or suitability for a specific joint.
When heat treatment is required, define the controlled route and required evidence: condition before treatment, property target, test location, sampling, decarburization or surface condition where relevant, lot traceability, external-supplier handoff, deviation rules and release responsibility. Choose the process route from geometry and volume
A special fastener may use turning, milling, drilling, stamping, heading, forming, thread cutting, thread rolling, grinding or a combination. The correct route depends on part geometry, material condition, tolerance, surface integrity, quantity, tooling economics and required evidence. The RFQ should describe any prohibited process, grain-flow requirement, stock-removal limit or surface condition that affects the route.
Owner-confirmed Zhengna Technology evidence includes made-to-drawing threaded parts within the CNC turning family and material families subject to drawing review. It does not prove that every custom fastener uses the same machine, process, size envelope or inspection plan. Quotations should therefore confirm the route for the actual part rather than inherit a capability table from an unrelated page.
Control coating zones and the after-finish thread state
A finish label alone is incomplete. Identify the controlling specification and revision, coating system, required zones, masked or bare regions, appearance areas, permitted contact marks, dimensions that apply after coating, and the evidence needed at release. State whether lubrication is part of the delivered condition and who owns any torque or friction validation.
For externally processed coating or heat treatment, maintain part revision and lot identity through the handoff. A certificate or thickness reading supports only the stated record scope. It does not prove corrosion life, thread fit, assembly torque, hydrogen-risk control or final-product compliance unless the contract names the method, sample, result and responsible party.

Plan inspection around functional characteristics
Inspection should follow the characteristics that control manufacture and assembly. Define datums, measurement state, method, gauge or fixture, frequency, report format, reaction plan and release owner. Typical RFQ questions include head-to-shank relationship, shoulder diameter and length, thread acceptance, cross-hole position, runout, straightness, drive recess, burr condition and finish zones. The actual set belongs to the drawing and application.
Do not use 100% inspection as a generic assurance phrase. If every part must receive a named check, state the characteristic, method, automation or manual boundary, reaction to a failure and retained evidence. Sampling, first-piece approval, destructive property tests and complete-lot release remain separate decisions.
Use standards to define buyer inputs, not to create a certificate
ISO 965-1:2026 defines principles and basic data for the tolerance system of ISO general-purpose metric screw threads. It helps the buyer identify a controlled thread basis; it does not select the correct class for an unnamed application.
ISO 898-1:2013 covers specified mechanical and physical properties for certain carbon- and alloy-steel bolts, screws and studs within its stated scope. It does not establish corrosion resistance, fatigue, clamp-force performance or suitability for every head geometry.
ISO 4042:2022 and its 2026 amendment address electroplated coating systems for fasteners within their stated scope. The buyer still needs to define the applicable coating, dimensional state, risk controls and acceptance evidence. Compare quotations by controlled assumptions, not only price
When two suppliers quote the same special fastener, compare what each quotation assumes about the drawing revision, thread tolerance, material or property basis, process route, external operations, finish state, inspection evidence and release responsibility. A lower price can describe a different part if one quotation excludes coating allowance, a critical shoulder, a secondary operation, a report or protective packaging.
Ask each supplier to list open technical questions, approved alternatives and the records included with samples and production lots. Confirm whether tooling, samples, test pieces, gauges, packaging and external-process evidence are included or priced separately. If the part is reconstructed from a sample, identify who owns the reconstructed definition and how the buyer approves it before production.
